September Sales Update 2010

FCAI release updated retail sales results for the third quarter of 2010.

FCAI

The motorcycle market is showing signs of stabilising following the difficulties of the financial downturn and a colder than usual winter.

Figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show 73,749 motorcycles, scooters and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) were sold in the nine months to September - a 10.7 per cent decline compared to the same period in 2009.

"There has been a slight improvement in the past three months with evidence that the market is now showing signs of stabilising," FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

"It's encouraging to see some renewed growth despite a colder than usual winter in most parts of Australia," he said.

"Competitive deals heading into summer will be welcomed by both brands and customers alike," Mr McKellar said.

Road-bikes were the most popular segment in the marketplace recording 27,978 sales (10.4 per cent decrease) followed by the off-road segment's 25,482 sales (13.3 per cent decrease).

There were 12,738 ATVs sold in the nine months to September (down 10.3 per cent) and scooter sales fell 3.4 per cent to record 7,551 sales.

Honda was the overall market leader with 15,446 sales, followed by Yamaha with 14,108 and then Suzuki with 10,445.
